Habitat for Health [H4H] main goal is to improve qualities of life that can save money, save the planet and do little things (or as big as we can manage) to make a difference in sustainable ways.
For example, by reducing demand for certain products and services the money you save can be spent on upgrading your own personalized Habitat for Health. It also means you draw less from the bank of natural resources which in turn gives Gaia time to reproduce its supply, plus more time to recycle waste.
- Reduce demand, money is saved, and GAIA's carrying capacity increases.
When a product is reused or repurposed, its life is extended, and the same benefits of reducing demand also gets extended as well. The complementary parts of reduction and reuse are the easy parts of waste management. But, when waste management is no longer economical guess who gets the job to finish the work?
- Reuse, extends product life cycles, thus reduces demand, and so, GAIA benefits.
Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects. It is an alternative to "conventional" waste disposal that can save material, and help lower greenhouse gas emissions. Recycling can prevent the waste of potentially useful materials and reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, thereby reducing: energy usage, air pollution (from incineration), and water pollution from plastic in waste water or landfill.
- Recycling is an essential part of all waste reduction. But unlike the other 2Rs, waste that's not profitable, humans give back to GAIA.
When GAIA recycles what humans discard, she does not stop at "conventional" or "alternative" ways to recycle. She goes all the way to elemental or hard to reach "sinks" like oil packaged in rock.
If we cannot, or will not, recycle toxic waste out of our "life systems", GAIA will do her best for us. The scary version is humans become waste in GAIA's life systems cleanup.
All of the above can be done by you, at least in part as an individual. The Habitat for Health method helps members select and take actions that helps GAIA in good ways.
Imagine what we all could do by just making better choices when shopping AND easing up on our waste stream.
Key Takeaways:
- Reduce demand, money is saved, and GAIA's carrying capacity increases.
- Reuse, extends product life cycles, thus reduces demand, and so, GAIA benefits.
- Recycling is an essential part of all waste reduction.
